Scala is known to be a great language for building data-intensive applications. Recently, we built a realtime system consuming the thousands of events created by our X1 set top boxes, aggregating the events, and streaming data over websockets. With the Akka toolkit at its core, I’ll introduce how Scala powered realtime viewing metrics that allow for instant feedback into what users are watching at any time. I’ll take you through how different data sources are combined, and transformed using composable futures. Finally, I’ll show how the Graph DSL provided by the akka-stream is used to create concise stages, and akka-http for simple web services.
